The MCA will be organised and operated by SISSA and the Parmenides Foundation and has been developed under the umbrella of EUNICE.



Postgraduate training and leading-edge research in various areas of Physics, Mathematics, and Neurosciences are the objectives of SISSA, the International School for Advanced Studies of Trieste. SISSA was the first Italian university to offer the PhD degree, and has continued to do so with notable success. Since its founding in 1978, SISSA has prepared more than 500 young people for careers in research and teaching: today SISSA represents one of the leading scientific institutions in Italy and a noted center on the international stage. Each of the School's eight Sectors hosts a staff of internationally recognized professors and junior fellows. The Sectors carry out original research projects and organize the post-graduate training of university graduates from throughout the world. In many cases, the training and research projects combine and integrate the expertise of multiple research groups. In this open-minded environment, the graduate students attend courses and conduct research under their advisor's guidance, acquiring the relevant academic background and, more importantly, the capacity to conduct research independently. In short, the students gain the experience necessary for a successful entry into the national and international scenes.

Parmenides Foundation

The Parmenides Foundation was established in 2000 as a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering multi-disciplinary research on thinking. The foundation is based in Germany and Italy. Its main activity is to run the Parmenides Center for the Study of Thinking, a research organization that was set up in cooperation with the Human Science Center of the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich. Furthermore, the foundation aims to translate research findings into insights that could serve as building blocks for new educational programs and software-based methodologies to support and enhance reasoning and decision-making. Parmenides Center for the Study of Thinking’ research agenda combines the exploration of underlying neurobiological processes with the quest for the conceptual frontiers of human thinking. The aim is to allow for the two approaches to shed light on each other thus creating potential for new perspectives and insights. The study of thinking requires the collaboration of scientists from a diverse range of fields and the center is intended to provide a supportive infrastructure for crossing disciplinary boundaries and implementing multi-disciplinary research on human thinking. The center draws on modern imaging techniques as well as on more conventional behavioral approaches and has its own EEG laboratory. The empirical work is complemented by philosophical methods. The long-term agenda is to develop a multi-layer theory of thinking.

EUNICE is a European network of interdisciplinary centres of excellence in research and teaching. Its members joined efforts in developing a new type of post-doc and executive education focussed on understanding and shaping processes of structural transformation. After two years of preparatory work, EUNICE was formally established in April 2008.
